Freedom of Mapuche Prisoners on Hunger Strike Demanded

Santiago de Chile, Sep 21 — Representatives of the Mapuche community in this capital the Government demanded the release of four prisoners in jail of Angol, in Chilean Araucanía, who met today 26 days on hunger strike. In statements to Prensa Latina, the Mapuche leader Nibaldo Huenuman stressed that the prisoners suffer physical deterioration, have lost about 10 kilograms in weight and their bodies are already quite affected, to the point that they can barely stand up.

"We hope the government listens to our demands, and find a solution to declare null the judgment of the brothers that remain in prison, which were unjustly accused and excessively severe sentenced, said Huenuman.

According to the activist, the authorities remain turning a deaf ear to the demands of the Mapuche communities, and there needs to be a conversation that is viable dialogue and work for a solution to the case.

"Our community here in Santiago will continue protesting through avenues, partially to break the siege of communications about our case and try that citizens know that there are four Mapuche on hunger strike for nearly 30 days, unjustly convicted", said Huenuman. Until around midnight on Thursday, and for nealy two hours, more than a hundred of Mapuche toured the central Paseo Ahumada, from the La Alameda to the Plaza de Armas, to demand the release of Erick Montoya, Rodrigo Montoya, Paulino Levipan and Daniel Levinao.
