In order to rescue ancestral Mapuche culture, the Indigenous Institute Foundation of Temuco (southern Chile) celebrates its 50th anniversary by launching the First Contest- EPEW (Mapuche stories), supported by the Regional Office of Education UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The competition started on 16 August 2012, it calls on children and youth of all schools and colleges throughout Chile, in two categories: fifth to eighth grade and first to fourth grades. It is aimed especially towards students of schools and rural schools where there is a greater Mapuche presence, who will gain additional points; but it is open to schools throughout Chile, as stated by the President of the Indigenous Institute Foundation, Presbítero Giglio Linfati.
They can enter the contest with stories collected from both traditional Mapuche oral sources (grandparents, Kimche lonko machi, Ngenpin, etc.) or it can be the creation of the participant, but it must address issues related to the Mapuche culture.
The contest will be open until noon on September 10, 2012 and awards will be on 25 September at 15:30 hrs on the premises of the Indian Institute Foundation.
Prizes for each category:
First Place: A book and a netbook
Second place: A book and a cell phone
Third Place: A book and MP4 player
Honorable mention: A book and mystery prize

The competition was launched in Temuco on16 August and will be open until 12:00 hrs. 10 Sept. The awards ceremony is planned for the 25th of September at the foundation´s offices.

1.- Pueden participar todas las escuelas y liceosinteresados, existirá una bonificación especial a las escuelas rurales y liceos con mayor presencia mapuche.
2.- Los cuentos pueden ser recopilados desde fuentes oralestradicionales mapuche (abuelos, abuelas, kimche, lonko, machi, ngepin, entre otros) o bien creación del propio niño/a y joven, pero deben abordar temáticas relacionadas con la cultura mapuche.
3.- Existirán sólo dos categorías en el concurso. Primera Categoría: 5° a 8° básico y Segunda Categoría: 1° a 4° medio.
4.- Cada participante podrá presentar sólo un Epew. Los trabajos deben presentarse con letra Arial 12, interlineando 1,5, máximo 4 carillas carta, pueden anexarse dibujos de su propia creación (no imágenes reproducidas de otras fuentes).
Se deben entregar 2 copias impresas del Epew, en sobre cerrado dirigido a:

Las decisiones del Jurado, incluido el fallo definitivo, se adoptarán por mayoría simple. Cualquier deliberación del jurado será secreta.
6.- Permiso de divulgación
Los participantes deberán autorizar a la Fundación Instituto Indígena para difundir sus obras en los medios y formato que estime conveniente. La autoría de cada obra se respetará y citará visiblemente.
