Chilean Police Violence Bursts into Mapuche Community

Imagen activa Santiago, Chile, Apr 2, 2012 — Chilean Police forces violently burst into a Mapuche community of La Araucania region on Monday, denounced indigenous spokespeople.

  Radio Cooperativa de Chile station quoted spokesman Daniel Meliano as saying that police heavily armed burst into the community, attacking residents, incuding children, and launching tear gas.

Melinao added that about 200 policemen took part in the violent action, in which two woman were arrested, identified as Albertina Melinao and Juana Montoya.

The police raid took place in the Mapuche community of Wente Winkul Mapu, in Ercilla municipality, Araucano region, about 800 kilometers south of this capital.

Meanwhile, Chilean police and attorney versions reported one policeman injured in his neck with a bullet during the raid.

According to Jesuit priest, it is aberrant the behaviour of the Special Police Forces in the Mapuche Communities, affecting innocent children and women.
