New Police Raid on Mapuche Community in Chile

Police raid

Santiago, Chile, Jan 24, 2012 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean police again disrupted violently in the Mapuche community of Araucania, indigenous representatives denounced on social networks.

Police officers used "heavy-caliber weapons" in the Mapuche community of Jose Guiñon, in the municipality of Ercilla, according to sources quoted by Radio Cooperativa de Chile.

Last week, a similar raid was carried out in the Jose Guiñon community, where the police used tear gas, according to Mapuche spokesman Juan Levipan.

Jesuit Priest Pablo Castro described as aberrant the stance of Chile's police towards the Mapuche communities in the country.

The police are making an outrageous use of instruments that affect innocent women and children, Castro underlined.
