Medical Report on Mapuche prisoners on hunger strike

Report on the history and medical history of the Mapuche prisoners Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca, Jonathan Sady Huillical, José Santiago Huenuche Reiman, Ramón Llanquileo Pilquiman, who have been on a hunger strike since March 15, 2011.

History and Medical History:

Mr. Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca, 43 years old, married with five children, university educated (social worker), rural origin.

Existing health conditions: myopia i.e near sightedness; severe meniscopathy  i.e inflammation of the cartilage of the left knee; episode of urinary retention, anemia; hunger strikes in 2007 lasting 80 days and in 2010 lasting 81 days. He has been on a liquid hunger strike since March 15, 2011, with an initial weight of 93.8 kg and a current weight of 72.3 kg.

Conclusions: Based on medical history and physical exam, it is possible to determine that the patient is hydrated, feverish, dinamia, pale skin, mucous, general despondency, loss of muscular strength, weight loss of 21.5 kg in 65 days without ingestion of food, cramps in hands, legs and right hemisphere of brain, severe headaches, and insomnia, which is treated muscle relaxers at night. No measurement of diuresis i.e. increased excretion of urine.

Mr. Jonathan Sady Huillical Méndez, 23 years old, married with 2 children (5 years and 5 months old), university educated, from a rural origin.

Existing health conditions: arrhythmias i.e abnormal heartbeat;  bradycardia i.e slow heart rhythm in examination; hunger strike in 2010 lasting 81 days. He has been on a liquid hunger strike since March 15, 2011, with an initial weight of 82.7 kg and a current weight of 63.4 kg

Conclusions: Based on medical history and physical examination, it is possible to determine that the patient is hydrated, feverish, dinamia, pale, general despondency, loss of muscular strength and a weight loss of 19.3 kg in 65 days with out consumption of food, general headaches, dizziness with quick movements, cramps in inferior members  i.e lower limbs, occasional sharp pain in pre-cordial region, insomnia in treatment with muscle relaxant at night and epigastralgia i.e pain in stomach/abdomen region. No measurement of diuresis i.e. increased excretion of urine.

Mr. José Santiago Huenuche Reiman, 34 years old, married with two children (five and two years old), university educated, rural origin.

Existing health conditions: liver disease in examination; hunger strike in 2010 lasting 81 days; He has been on a liquid hunger strike since March 15, 2011, with an initial weight of 68.2 kg and a current weight of 51 kg.

Conclusions: Based on medical history and physical exam, it is possible to determine that the patient is hydrated, feverish, dinamia, pale skin, mucous, slight headaches, irritable, general despondency, episodes of diarrhea with intake of water, loss of muscular strength and a weight loss of 17.2 kg in 65 days without consumption of food. No measurement of diuresis i.e. increased excretion of urine.

Mr. Ramón Llanquileo Pilquiman, 29 years old with two children 10 and 3 years old, rural origin.

Existing medical conditions: arrhythmias  i.e abnormal heartbeat bradycardia i.e slow heart rhythm, in examination; vision loss up to 50% in right eye from being hit by a rubber bullet; adaptability disorder, which received specialized attention; hunger strike in 2010 lasting 81 days. He has been on a liquid hunger strike since March 15, 2011 with an initial weight of 72.5 kg and a current weight of 54.4 kg.

Conclusions: Based on medical history and physical exam, it is possible to determine that the patient is hydrated, feverish, dinamia, pale skin, mucous, moderate general headaches, permanent paravertebral muscular pain, permanent dizziness, prolonged insomnia in treatment with muscle relaxers at night, irritable, general despondency, precordial pain, heart beat rhythm, good tone, no heart murmur, cardiac frequency of 48 beats per minute, loss of muscular strength and a weight loss of 18.1 kg in 65 days without consumption of food. No measurement of diuresis i.e. increased excretion of urine.

Dr. Juan Carlos Reinao Marilao has suggested the following recommendations for all the patients:

  1. Surveillance according to progress/development

  2. Measure vital signs every 6 hours

  3. Maintain potable water supply 24 hours

  4. Maintain hygienic means according to circumstances

  5. Request: hemogram i,e detailed blood test; plasma electrolytes, calcium, sulphate and magnesium, liver tests, creatinina, uric nitrogen, EKG. OBS: pending there is no guarantee according the patients.

  6. Computerized abdominal axial tomography (abdominal CAT scan), for José Huenuche Reiman.

  7. Removal of Ramón Llanquileo Pilquiman and José Huenuche Reiman with 24 hours.

  8. Place of location for the following days should comply with the following: 24 hours professional monitoring, exclusive space for patients with vulnerable immune systems and mental health to avoid infection.
